bio

Alex Sam Davis is a San Francisco Bay Area artist and educator. Within the California Graffiti scene of the 1990s, Davis began his artistic practice by “hitting up” freight trains and walls in the San Francisco Bay Area. Later, with growing awareness of the formal connections between contemporary graffiti and fine art he developed a new “visual language” of lines, patterns, borders, and isometric perspective contained within flat layers. Today, in the era of social networking and the internet, he continues his work towards a “new aesthetic,” with an emphasis on highly moderated viral imagery as source material.

Davis studied painting and sculpture at School of the Art Institute Chicago, where he received his Master of Fine Arts degree. His work has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, and San Francisco Arts Quarterly.
